    Thomas Harriot crossed the Atlantic Ocean on behalf of Sir Walter Raleigh, arriving off the coast of Virginia (now Cape Lookout, North Carolina). He spent about a year in North America cataloging flora and fauna and trying not to starve to death before being rescued by Sir Francis Drake.

    Newton sent his "Epistola prior" to Leibniz via Henry Oldenburg. Newton's famous work contained the first use of fractional exponents as well as his newly discovered binomial theorem.
