Acing the AIME without Scratch Work

Eleven-year-old Ben Lou scored in the top one percent on the American Invitational Mathematics Examination—and he did most of the math in his head.

Diagnosed with spinal muscular dystrophy when he was a year old, Ben is quadriplegic and wheelchair bound. Since it is difficult for him to hold a pencil, Ben solves most problems in his head. 

Ben, who scored 138 out of 150 on the AIME, will be among the mathletes representing the United States tomorrow in the World Math Team Championship.
