AMS Announces Inaugural Class of Fellows

MAA past and future presidents were named Fellows of the American Mathematical Society for 2013.

MAA Presidents that were named AMS Fellows include: Lynn Arthur Steen (MAA President 1985-1986), Lida K. Barrett (1989-1990), Thomas Banchoff (1999-2000), Ronald Graham (2003-2004), Joseph A. Gallian (2007-2008), David Bressoud (2009-2010), and future MAA President Bob Devaney.

This is the initial year of the Fellows of the AMS program. The inaugural class includes 1119 mathematical scientists from around the world. The full list is available here.

According to an AMS Press Release:

The Fellows of the AMS designation recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics. Among the goals of the program are to create an enlarged class of mathematicians recognized by their peers as distinguished for their contributions to the profession and to honor excellence.
