Math in the NewsPlatform for Collaborative Math Communication LaunchedAs part of the March 5 European kickoff of Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE) 2013, the United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization (UNESCO) headquarters in Paris hosted the launch of "IMAGINARY-open mathematics," a platform for open and interactive mathematics. Created by the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, IMAGINARY began in 2008 as a math and arts exhibition. The platform now allows users—in schools, at home, in museums—to both access existing exhibits and create their own. Oberwolfach director Gert-Martin Greuel says The way we perceive and communicate mathematics is changing. The general public is longing for interactive museums showing actual research and highlighting open questions. With IMAGINARY we try to go one step further: the public not only visits museums or exhibitions, they create and stage them—in an intuitive manner! This way they become an integral part of the communication process—and science itself becomes participative. Read the press release or go straight to IMAGINARY. |
