Math in the NewsEndowed Professorship for Math and Art Established at Pratt InstituteThe husband and son of the Pratt Institute's chair of mathematics and science have committed $2.5 million to establish the Sirovich Family Professorship of Mathematics for the Arts. The endowed professorship is the first in Pratt's history for a full-time faculty position, and is hoped to boost the Brooklyn art and design college's efforts to expand its liberal arts offerings and engage in interdisciplinary exploration. According to Pratt, the professorship aims to promote cross-disciplinary collaborations and initiatives to explore connections between mathematics and art, design, and architecture. In so doing, it will highlight the potential role of mathematics in the creation of art, in the way that people experience art, and will provide new opportunities for the Pratt community to discover the mathematical beauty at the heart of art, design, and architecture.
