Piero della Francesca, Italian painter and mathematician, died in Sansepolcro, Italy. He wrote the first treatise on the mathematics of perspective.

George Bruce Halsted, president of the Texas Academy of Science, gave his inaugural address on "Original research and creative authorship: the essence of university teaching." A mathematician, he was J. J. Sylvester's first Ph.D. student at Johns Hopkins University.

Edwin Abbott, author of Flatland, died in London, England. First published in 1884, the book was subtitled A romance of many dimensions, and its author given as A Square.
