David Gregory, nephew of James Gregory, died in Berkshire, England. His interest in mathematics grew when he read his uncle's papers just after his uncle died in 1675.

Naval School (now United States Naval Academy) opened in Annapolis, Maryland.

Norman Levinson, a former student and longtime faculty member at MIT, died in Boston, Massachusetts. Levinson made important advances in harmonic analysis and differential equations and was making progress on the Riemann Hypothesis just before his death.
