1853 Josef Wronski died near Paris, France. Best known for the determinant now called the Wronskian, he was concerned primarily with foundations and philosophy of mathematics.

1900 David Hilbert address: "We hear within us the perpetual call: There is a problem. Seek its solution. You can find it by pure reason, for in mathematics there is no 'ignorabimus'," said Hilbert, in his famous address, "Mathematical problems," to the second International Congress of Mathematicians at Paris.
