| 1775 | Montucla served as Royal Censor and anonymous editor for a new edition of Jacques Ozanam's book on mathematical recreations. The first edition had been published in 1694.

| 1802 | Neils Henrik Abel born in Stavanger, Norway. Before going to university in 1821, he attacked the problem of the solution of the quintic equation. He submitted a solution for publication but found an error before it was published. In 1823 he proved the impossibility of a radical expression that solves fifth or higher degree equations.

| 1910 | Julius Petersen died in Copenhagen, Denmark. Best known for the Petersen graph, he worked in graph theory and geometry.
