Montucla served as Royal Censor and anonymous editor for a new edition of Jacques Ozanam's book on mathematical recreations. The first edition had been published in 1694.

Neils Henrik Abel born in Stavanger, Norway. Before going to university in 1821, he attacked the problem of the solution of the quintic equation. He submitted a solution for publication but found an error before it was published. In 1823 he proved the impossibility of a radical expression that solves fifth or higher degree equations.
