Eamon de Valera died in Dublin, Ireland. President of the Republic of Ireland from 1959 to 1973 and active in opposing British rule and establishing the Republic from 1913 onward, he had been a popular mathematics teacher and promising mathematics researcher. He retained a lifelong interest in mathematics.
