1584 Pierre Vernier, who developed an accurate scale for the astrolabe known as the Vernier scale, was born in Ornans, France, then part of the Spanish Habsburgs, on this day.

1662 Blaise Pascal died in Paris, France, at the age of 39. The mathematician and philosopher is well known for projective geometry, probability theory, and religious reflection, but best known for his treatise on the arithmetic triangle, now known as Pascal's triangle.
