1865 Algebraic geometer Guido Castelnuovo, who, when Jewish students were barred from the state universities in the 1930s, organized courses for them, was born in Venice, Italy, on this day.

1894 The first summer meeting of the American Mathematical Society was held in one of the lecture-rooms of the Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn, New York, August 14-15. Only ten papers were presented!
