Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon finished drawing what some describe as "the world's longest straight line." Actually two straight lines, it forms parts of the boundaries between the U.S. states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

Otto Toeplitz born in Breslau, Germany (now Poland). In 1949 he published an introduction to the calculus based on the history of the subject. This delightful book is available in English as The Calculus: A Genetic Approach (1963).

Start of Mark series of computers: The Mark I computer began operation at Harvard University. The IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (ASCC) was an electro-mechanical computer.
