1845 George Howard Darwin, fifth child of the evolutionist Charles Darwin and mathematical astronomer, was born on this day. After graduating Second Wrangler and Smith's Prizeman at Cambridge in 1866 he studied law before settling down to his life work in mathematical astronomy. He addressed the Fifth International Congress of Mathematicians at Cambridge in 1912 on his work on the three body problem.
