Bastille Day celebrates the 1789 storming of the Bastille Prison in Paris, France, and the start of the French Revolution. The Revolution ushered in many reforms including the metric system in 1791 and that hotbed of 19th century mathematics, the Ecole Polytechnique, in 1794.

Tape measure patented. Alvin J. Fellows of New Haven, Connecticut, received patent no. 79,965 for the first tape measure. The tape measure was enclosed in a circular base with a spring lock to hold the tape at any desired point.
