Copernicus' De Revolutionibus published two months before its author died. The Polish astronomer had outlined his heliocentric theory in 1514 in a small booklet distributed to friends and he announced it publicly in De Revolutionibus.

Joseph Fourier, whose then controversial 1807 paper, "On the Propagation of Heat in Solid Bodies," would spur later work on trigonometric series and the nature of functions, was born in Auxerre, France, on this day.
