1703 Isaac Newton made president of the Royal Society, an office he held until his death in 1727.

1712 William Jones elected fellow of the Royal Society. In 1706 he introduced the Greek letter pi for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The symbol was not generally used in this sense until Euler adopted it in 1737.

1753 Benjamin Franklin received the Copley Medal, the highest honor of the Royal Society of London, for his "curious experiments and observations on electricity." He was the first American to receive the Copley Medal. Three years later he was elected a member of the Royal Society.
