1850 Sylvester was called to the Bar. Rather than practicing law, he gave private instruction in mathematics, and counted among his pupils Florence Nightingale.

1944 Arthur Eddington died in Cambridge, England. The astronomer and physicist wrote Mathematical Theory of Relativity, a book highly praised by Einstein, in 1923.

1996 Garrett Birkhoff died in Water Mill, New York. He may be best known for the algebra text he wrote with Saunders MacLane. Survey of Modern Algebra was first published in 1941.
