Arthur Eddington died in Cambridge, England. The astronomer and physicist wrote Mathematical Theory of Relativity, a book highly praised by Einstein, in 1923.

Garrett Birkhoff died in Water Mill, New York. He may be best known for the algebra text he wrote with Saunders MacLane. Survey of Modern Algebra was first published in 1941.
