Robert Simson passed a simple test of his mathematical knowledge and was duly admitted as professor of mathematics at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. His most influential work was a definitive edition of Euclid's Elements in 1749.

Christian Goldbach died in Moscow, Russia. The Goldbach Conjecture says that every even integer greater than 2 can be written as a sum of two primes.

Benoit Mandelbrot, who coined the term "fractal", was born in Warsaw, Poland. His book, The Fractal Geometry of Nature (1982), not only popularized fractals, but helped convince mathematicians and scientists of their importance.
