Johannes Kepler died in Regensburg, Germany. Best known for his laws of planetary motion, his mathematical accomplishments also included compiling the Rudolphine Tables and anticipating both differential and integral calculus.

Sir William Herschel, English astronomer, born in Hanover, Germany. He and his sister, Caroline Herschel, also an astronomer, spent most of their adult lives in England and William's son, John Herschel became a mathematician, lawyer, and astronomer, in approximately that order.

Birthdate of Michel Chasles, historian of mathematics. He was the victim of the clever and prolific literary forger, Denis Vrain-Lucas, who from 1861 to 1869 sold him thousands of "manuscripts" including some of Newton and Pascal.
