1906 William Thomson, by then Lord Kelvin, wrote, "The unique strength of Cambridge, as a place of experimental research, and as a leader in the advancement of Science generally, has depended greatly on the mathematical foundations given a large portion of all the undergraduates by the mathematical Tripos."
