Abraham de la Pryme recorded in his diary that Newton had a fire in his study that destroyed the manuscript of his Optics: "every one thought he would have run mad, he was so troubled thereat that he was not himself for a month after."

Gaston Julia born in Algeria. The French mathematician is best known for his namesake Julia set. Besides having been "one of the forefathers of modern dynamical systems theory," he was the author of 30 books on various types of mathematics (O'Connor and Robertson, MacTutor Archive).
