1643 Isaac Newton born in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England, according to the Gregorian calendar, not adopted in England until 1752. According to the pre-1752 English calendar, Newton was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1642.

1752 Gabriel Cramer died while traveling from his hometown of Geneva, Switzerland, to the south of France. Best known for Cramer's Rule for solving systems of equations, he worked primarily in analysis.

1845 Italian geometer Giusto Bellavitis appointed full professor of descriptive geometry at the University of Padua following a competitive examination. He held no degrees until the university awarded him an honorary doctorate in philosophy and mathematics the following year.

1961 Erwin Schroedinger, theoretical physicist, died in Vienna, Austria. He received the Nobel Prize for his work on wave mechanics.
