Edward Routh, who became a prominent teacher and coach for the Cambridge Tripos and who contributed to classical mechanics, was born in Quebec, Canada, on this day.

William Watson born in Nantucket, Massachusetts. In 1862, he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Jena, Germany, being the first American to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics at a foreign university. Later he taught at Harvard and MIT. In the same year Yale was the first American college to grant a Ph.D. in mathematics.
