Mathematical Communication

Proof writing; guiding text   COURSE_COMMUNITIES_HTML_ID

Topic Teaching Tip(s): Courses in which students communicate about mathematics | Communication recitations | General principles of mathematical communication | Guiding the audience through the content | Types of proof & proof-writing strategies

This recitation from MIT's communication-intensive offering of Real Analysis focuses on proof writing. Students are given samples of proofs by contradiction and are challenged to rewrite them as direct proofs if possible; this activity leads to a discussion of when to use which types of proof. Another handout is used to illustrate how to use guiding text to communicate the structure of a proof.
