1557 Nicolo Tartaglia died in Venice, Italy. He is famous for applying mathematics to ballistics in his Nova scientia, for solving cubic equations, and for his priority dispute with Cardano over the latter.

1887 Mathematician George Polya born in Budapest, Hungary. He worked in many areas of mathematics but may be best known for his books on mathematical thinking and problem-solving, such as How to solve it and Mathematics and plausible reasoning.

1907 Emmy Noether received her Ph.D. degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Erlangen, for a dissertation on algebraic invariants directed by Paul Gordan. She went on to become one of the world's greatest mathematicians.
