June 30 - July 4, 2008:  Joint Study Conference on Statistics Education

              The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) and the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE) announce the Joint ICMI/IASE Study, Statistics Education in School Mathematics:  Challenges for Teaching and Teacher Education.  Following the tradition of ICMI Studies, this Study will comprise two parts:  the Joint Study Conference and the production of the Joint Study book.  The Joint Study Conference will be merged with the IASE 2008 Round Table Conference.  The study will bring the mathematics and statistics education communities to work in collaboration with the aim on analyzing the situation of teaching statistics at school level and making recommendations about how to train mathematics teachers to better succeed in educating statistically literate students.

August 3-5, 2007:  MathFest 2007

            The annual summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America contains many events in the history of mathematics, particularly events dealing with the life and work of Leonhard Euler.  In particular, many of these special talks are sponsored by the Euler Society, in honor of Euler's 300th birthday.  For the entire program, see http://www.maa.org/programs/reg123/mathfest-schedule.pdf.

July 27-29, 2007:  Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Mathematics

            The annual meeting of the society takes place at Concordia University in Montreal, in connection with the British Society for the History of Mathematics. July 19-24, 2007:  5th European Summer University on History and Epistemology in Mathematics Education (ESU-5)

             This is the fifth in a continuing series of international conferences which provide a forum for presenting research in mathematics education and innovative teaching methods based on a historical, epistemological and cultural approach to mathematics and its teaching.  ESU-5 will also give the opportunity to mathematics teachers, educators, and researchers to share their teaching ideas and classroom experinece and, in this way, motivate further collaboration in this perspective among members of the mathematics education community in Europe and beyond.

June, 2007:  Two MAA PREP Workshops in the History of Mathematics

             Two one-week workshops as part of the MAA Professional Enhancement P rogram will be conduced at MAA headquarters in Washington, DC in June.  The first is "Mathematics from Asia's Past", led by Victor Katz, Frank Swetz, and Kim Plofker.  The second is "The Genius of Euler", led by William Dunham.

Ongoing:  Frederick V. Pohle Colloquium in the History of Mathematics

             This monthly colloquium is hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Adelphi University.

Ongoing:  Philadelphia Area Seminar on the History of Mathematics

             This monthly seminar of faculty from Philadelphia area colleges and universities generally takes place at Villanova University.

March 23, 2007:  HPM Americas Meeting, Atlanta

        This meeting, held in conjunction with the NCTM Annual Meeting, will be dedicated to the memory of Karen Dee Michalowicz.

March 21-24, 2007:  NCTM 2007 Annual Meeting, Atlanta

            There are numerous presentations at the NCTM annual meeting that deal with the history of mathematics and its use in teaching.

January 27-28, 2007:  Arithmos XXIII

             Arithmos seminars are 24-hour workshops on the classics of mathematics.  This one will deal with Euler's Foundations of Calculus.

January 5-9, 2007:  Joint Mathematics Meetings

             The Joint Meetings of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society contain many sessions dealing with the history of mathematics and its use in teaching.

October 13-14, 2006: Midwest History of Mathematics Conference

              This annual meeting takes place in 2006 at Pennsylvania State University, Erie.

October 12-14, 2006:  Middle Atlantic Symposium on History of Mathematics

              The Symposium will be discussing Gauss's Disquisitiones Arithmeticae.  Participants will be expected to have read part IV of the Disquisitiones and to be prepared to discuss it.

August 22-30, 2006:  International Congress of Mathematicians

              The ICM meets every four years.  This year, the meeting is in Madrid.  As usual, there is one section devoted to the history of mathematics.  In that section are two invited lectures and numerous short communications.

    

August 10-12, 2006:  MAA Mathfest

            The annual MAA summer meeting will take place in Knoxville, TN.  There are several sessions dealing with the history of mathematics and its use in teaching.

 

July 30-August 2, 2006:  Fifth Annual Meeting of the Euler Society

          The Euler Society was founded as the tercentennial of the birth of the prolific Swiss-born genius Leonhard Euler approaches.  This effort is not only timely, but important for attempts to reinvigorate the teaching, learning, and wider understanding of mathematics, and for efforts to plumb deeper interconnections among mathematics, mechanics, astronomy, and technology.

 

April 28, 2006:  HPM Americas Meeting

             The annual meeting of the HPM Americas Section will take place Friday, April 28 at 5:30 pm. in the Landmark 5 room of the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis, in connection with the annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
