Poincare, Jules Henri (1854-1912)

Mathematical discoveries, small or great, are never born of spontaneous generation. They always presuppose a soil seeded with preliminary knowledge and well prepared by labour, both conscious and subconscious.

Benjamin Banneker

by Karen Michalowicz, reviewer

Benjamin Banneker, 34"x 36" ($12.50),  Carolina Biological Supply Company, 2700 York Road, Burlington NC 27215, (800) 334-5551, http://www.carolina.com/.

As a long time admirer and student of the life of Benjamin Banneker, I was delighted with the poster, Benjamin Banneker - African American Mathematician and Astronomer, developed and published by Carolina Biological Supply.  The poster includes not only a suitable image of Banneker, but also contains a brief history of his life and accomplishments.  The designer of the poster used an expert consultant so that the biographical information is authentic, and not the myth that is found in many sources.  This poster hangs in my classroom from year to year.  It is one of my favorites.

I highly recommend the poster.  It is colorful, interesting, and draws student attention.
