About the Author: (from The American Mathematical Monthly, (2007)) Katherine Socha received her B.A. from Reed College, her M.S. from Portland State University, her interest in oceanography from studies at Oregon State University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. After spending two years at the Lyman Briggs School of Science at Michigan State University, she is currently an assistant professor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a public liberal arts college located in southern Maryland between the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Alas, she is not fond of seafood.
