Steen received his MIT Ph.D. in 1965 under Kenneth Hoffman and has been at St. Olaf College except for sabbatical leave in 1970-71 at the Inst. Mittag-Leffler, Sweden. His research in centered on topology, and he is the author with J.A. Seebach, Jr. of Counterexamples in Topology.
