About the Author(s): (from The American Mathematical Monthly, vol. 85 (1978)) Lawrence A. Shepp received his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1961 at Princeton University under W. Feller and has been at Bell Laboratories, Murrary Hill, N.J. since 1962, where he is a member of the Mathematics Center. He has made many contributions to probability theory and received a Paul Levy prize. He became interested in tomography in 1972. He presented this paper as invited lecturer at the MAA and AMS meetings in Toronto, 1976.
Joseph B. Kruskal received his Ph.D. in mathematics at Princeton in 1954. He has been a member of the Bell Laboratories Mathematics Center since 1958, but has taught at Princeton, Madison, Ann Arbor, Yale, Cambridge (England), and Columbia at various times. He has made contributions to combinatorial mathematics, statistics, the mathematics of psychology, and statistical linguistics, and has been president of the Psychometric Society and The Classification Society (NAB).
