About the Author: (from The College Mathematics Journal, Vol. 15, No. 2, (1984)) Anthony Barcellos is an analyst with the Commission on State Finance, California’s principal economic forecasting agency.  Mr. Barcellos has a B.S. in mathematics from Caltech and an M.S. from the California State University, Fresno. While a graduate student and staff instructor in mathematics at the University of California at Davis, he was awarded both the departmental and campus awards for distinguished teaching. His interviews of Martin Gardner, Slanislaw Ulam, and Benoit Mandelbrot will appear in “Mathematical People” (Birkhauser Boston), and he is presently completing a book on Conway’s game of Life.
