About the Author: (from Mathematics Magazine, Vol. 64 (1991)) Israel Kleiner received his Ph.D. in ring theory at McGill University, and is retired from York University. He was coordinator of an in-service Master's Programme in mathematics for teachers, and was an active secondary-school liaison. The history of mathematics and its role in the teaching of mathematics are among his major interests.
