About the Author: (from Mathematics Magazine, Vol. 62 (1989)) Thomas Archibald obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1987, and taught at Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He is currently a professor at Simon Fraser University. His research interests include the history of analysis in the nineteenth century, with particular emphasis on the relationship between developments in pure mathematics and those in mathematical physics.
