Tips on Searching

Here are some tips that should help you to search through the resources in Classroom Capsules.

  • Simple Search
  • Each article in the Classroom Capsule collection has been assigned a number of key words and/or phrases. To search on a phrase put quotation marks around the phrase, or else the phrase will be treated as separate words, and each space as an "or". So a search on Pythagorean Theorem will return all articles with either Pythagorean or Theorem in the title or description, whereas a search on "Pythagorean Theorem" will return only articles with the phrase in the title or description.

  • Quotation marks can also be used to search over the root of a word. For example, searching over "quad" (with quotes) will select, among others, capsules with both "quadric" and "quadratic" in the title or description.

  • The keyword search can be used to find articles by author. For example, searching over Nelsen will turn up all capsules authored by Roger B Nelsen (and any other authors named Nelsen).

  • You can combine a subject designation with a keyword. So selecting 6.1 Single Variable Calculus as a subject and entering the keyword sine returns all articles with subject classification ""6.1 Single Variable Calculus"" and containing the word ""sine"" in the title or the description.

  • Advanced Search
  • In addition to subject and keywords, the Advanced Search allows you to search over dates of publication and applicable courses. To search for capsules in a certain year place that year into the `From` and the `Until` box. Omit the `The`when searching over `The College Mathematics Journal`.

  • In the Advanced Search, you can refine your search as you go – adding in more conditions as appropriate.
