Old-Fashioned Math Methods Cling to Life
For the last two decades, the basis of concept-based instruction--a result of the so-called Math Wars--has been "exaggerated in every direction," according to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). "Our position is that math ought to be reasonable and kids ought to be able to make sense of it," said Hank Kepner, NCTM president. The key issue, he indicated, is that "a lot of adults view math as a cut-and-dried thing, not a method of reasoning."
